Our Impact

Our focus

Stronger People. Stronger Communities.

We believe in the potential of every individual and the power of education to create opportunity.

  • The Challenges

Many are ready to work—but not fully supported to thrive.

In our community, many people bring resilience, determination, and unique skills to their personal and professional journeys. Yet, for those pursuing careers in the skilled trades, barriers to economic stability remain significant. Many available jobs in construction, transportation, and related industries offer limited wages, unpredictable hours, or lack essential benefits, making long-term financial security difficult to achieve.

Access to education and career advancement in the trades is often restricted by linguistic and cultural differences. Non-native English speakers encounter training programs and workplace environments that are not always designed with their experiences in mind, adding complexity to their learning and professional growth. Additionally, the rapid evolution of technology in skilled trades requires workers to continuously adapt, while access to digital tools and training remains uneven. Adult learners struggle with digital access at various levels, from basic skills like navigating and submitting online applications to mid-level proficiency in essential digital systems such as blueprint software, logistics platforms, and safety compliance tools, all of which are increasingly necessary for career mobility.

Interpersonal skills, are also crucial for success in skilled trades but are not always integrated into traditional training programs. For workers who had limited educational opportunities earlier in life, balancing the demands of hands-on training, certification requirements, and personal responsibilities requires extraordinary effort.

LAWD strives to create career pathways that build upon the strengths of our community members while equipping them with the tools needed to thrive in a rapidly changing workforce.

Our students bring their own strengths and skills to start or continue the journey through their education and growth. At the Latino Academy of Workforce Development we provide a holistic approach that goes beyond traditional training programs by providing wrap-around support services that help students navigate personal, academic, and professional challenges.

Through our Education and Workforce Development programs, students access academic credentials, job-specific training, and hands-on experiences that align with their goals. We are actively developing digital literacy and interpersonal skills curricula to meaningfully integrate them into our approach. Grounded in human-centered design, we are designing programs that will equip learners in the skilled trades with the tools they need to navigate an increasingly technology-driven workforce. Additionally, we are exploring ways to incorporate interpersonal skills—such as communication, teamwork, and adaptability—so that students are well-prepared to thrive in trade industries. As we continue to refine and implement these elements, we remain committed to ensuring that our education and workforce development programs align with the evolving needs of skilled labor and the broader economy.

We prioritize building confidence, bridging cultural divides, and creating a strong sense of belonging. Our partnerships with local industries and community organizations expand access to meaningful career pathways. With culturally relevant support, personalized guidance, and credentials that hold value in today’s job market, students enhance their ability to succeed and contribute positively to their communities.
