DANE COUNTY HIGHWAY DEPTARTMENT INTERSHIP

The Dane County Highway Department Internship is a paid, hands-on training opportunity designed to prepare participants for long-term employment in road maintenance and construction. Offered in partnership with the Latino Academy of Workforce Development and the Urban League of Greater Madison, this 30-week internship provides real-world experience working alongside seasoned professionals in the field. Participants gain practical skills in highway operations, safety procedures, and equipment use while building a direct pathway to full-time positions with Dane County Highway. The internship is ideal for individuals looking to begin a stable, family-sustaining career in public infrastructure.

Enrollment Requirements

To qualify, applicants must:

​

  • Be at least 18 years old

  • Possess a valid Wisconsin driver’s license

  • Have a CDL Learner’s Permit (CLP) at minimum (a Class B or A CDL is strongly preferred)

  • Pass a DOT physical and drug screening

  • Demonstrate reliability, strong work ethic, and ability to follow safety protocols

  • Be open to learning, feedback, and working as part of a team

  • Show interest in careers in highway maintenance, construction, or public works.

Spanish-speaking applicants are encouraged to apply, and language support is available throughout the process.

Tuition and Fees

This program is free for eligible participants. All classroom instruction, behind-the-wheel training, study materials, and job placement support are covered through grants and partnerships.

However, students are responsible for covering required pre-requisite fees, which include:

  • CDL License Fee

  • CDL Permit Fee

  • Federal Medical Exam (FedMed) Fee

Schedule and Format

All instruction is conducted in person at the Latino Academy Truck Driving Training Center in Lake Mills, WI. The program includes online-based learning on safety, regulations, and vehicle systems, followed by behind-the-wheel driving practice with a licensed instructor. Training sessions are held Monday-Friday in two sessions held during the day, one in the morning (8am-12pm) and one in the afternoon (1-4pm). During a portion of the year, classes are held in the evenings Monday-Friday and on Saturday morning to accommodate working adults and caregivers. Students are expected to attend every class session for approximately 8 weeks.
