COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE

​The Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Program at the Latino Academy of Workforce Development prepares participants to earn their Class A CDL and pursue in-demand careers in transportation and logistics. This hands-on training program combines classroom instruction with behind-the-wheel driving experience, equipping students with the knowledge and skills needed to operate commercial vehicles safely and confidently. The program also includes support for passing the state CDL exam and provides job readiness training to help students transition directly into employment upon graduation.

Enrollment Requirements

To enroll in the CDL Program, participants must meet both program and Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old

  • Have a valid Wisconsin driver’s license

  • Obtain a CDL Learner’s Permit (CLP)

  • Complete a DOT physical exam by a certified medical examiner

  • Register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse

  • Provide proof of residency and legal presence in the U.S.

  • Have a clean driving record (limited recent violations may be acceptable)

Per FMCSA regulations, CDL drivers must show at least an intermediate level of English proficiency to obtain a CDL. Bilingual support is available throughout the process to assist Spanish-speaking participants in completing these steps.

Tuition and Fees

This program is free for eligible participants. All classroom instruction, behind-the-wheel training, study materials, and job placement support are covered through grants and partnerships.

However, students are responsible for covering required pre-requisite fees, which include:

  • CDL License Fee

  • CDL Permit Fee

  • Federal Medical Exam (FedMed) Fee

  • Driving Record Fee

Schedule and Format

Training sessions are held Monday-Friday in two sessions held during the day:

​

  • Morning (8:00 am - 12:00 pm) 

  • Afternoon (1-4 pm)

  • During a portion of the year, classes are held in the evenings, Monday-Friday, and on Saturday mornings to accommodate working adults and caregivers.
