MARY CARMEN
ENGLISH PROGRAM
Mary Carmen Araujo Sánchez knew she wanted to improve her English, but what she found at the Latino Academy offered more than vocabulary. The classroom gave her space to participate—to speak, listen, and slowly step into greater confidence.
“I’m naturally quiet,” she says. “But being in class with others helped me feel more comfortable.”
The ESL course was practical from the start. It focused on everyday language, situations she could relate to. But just as important as the content was the way the class was taught—with patience, respect, and real understanding of how adults learn.
She brought those lessons home. Her children and husband don’t speak English, so she teaches what she learns—bit by bit, folding it into family routines. It’s not formal, but it’s meaningful.
The GED/HSED program added another layer. It reminded her that continuing her education wasn’t something to explain or justify—it was just the next step. She takes it one assignment, one conversation, one quiet victory at a time.
